You should also consider whether the course is fee paying or whether Commonwealth Supported places are available (formerly HECS), and whether you are able to defer payment under these schemes. Most students enrolled in undergraduate degrees at GUC have Commonwealth Supported Places. Annual student contribution levels are shown in the table below for students commencing a new full-time course of study in 2008.

Financial Assistance


Government allowances are available to eligible students to help make the financial cost of study more manageable – be sure to read the information booklet available from the Australian Tax Office and Centrelink, or visit www.goingtouni.gov.au for further details about your potential obligations.

You may also be eligible for assistance through scholarships, or your costs may be tax deductible – it’s worth investigating. Student Services can also provide you with advice on important sources of financial assistance, including the Commonwealth Government funded loan scheme for students experiencing financial difficulties.

Expense Details

 

TEXTBOOKS Textbooks costs vary, depending on whether you share or buy new or second-hand.
HIGHER EDUCATION LOAN PROGRAM (HELP) Students enrolled in Commonwealth supported or fee paying places may be eligible for financial assistance in the form of HECS- or FEE-HELP. Your fees may either be paid upfront or deferred until after you have finished your course and are working. The information booklets explaining these schemes are available from the GUC, Centrelink and the Australian Taxation Office.
OTHER You also need to take into account expenses for specific course requirements such as materials and computing requirements, as well as personal costs such as travel.
